Weaned off Worry

Do you carry around a burden?

a decision looming perhaps?

The inevitable unknown

that may fall into your lap?

Are there things to do next week

or pains you anticipate ahead?

A fear of something tomorrow

a scary future that you dread?

Anxiety like a rocking chair

back and forth it goes.

It comes upon us like a wave

knocking us backwards off our toes.

Perhaps a reassuring word

is the calming that we need.

The groaning of the Holy Spirit

and a Savior to intercede.

The nations rage, the kingdoms totter

the mountains move into the sea.

But I know a God who is my refuge

the Lord of hosts is the one with me.

I do not occupy my thoughts with things

too great and grand for my heart.

Like a weaned child with its mother

from my soul he’ll surely not depart.

You are my hiding place and my shield

you hold me up that I may be still.

And projecting tomorrow into today

does not hasten me towards your will.

For who is seated at God’s right hand

far above all dominion and power?

Jesus our Great high Priest

we can call upon at any hour.

All things under his feet

head over all that he reigns.

All things created through and for him

he is the hope that we proclaim.

So cast all your anxieties on him

because he cares for you.

Love your neighbor, serve your friend

in the small things be faithful and true.

For when the righteous cry for help

his ears are towards their fears.

And as we walk in this fallen world

our Redeemer keeps bottled our tears.

For in just a little while

our fretting will turn into delight

When at last we see his face

and our faith gives way to sight.

So aspire to live quietly and mind your affairs.

And when the waters around you feel deep.

Remember the Lord is your keeper and shade

He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
