Concerning Marriage

The glazed over look,

the wedding day,

Its here! Its here, you sigh.

You get to marry the one you love,

as you blissfully look into his eyes.

Your stomachs turning all in knots,

You smile so much it hurts your face.

But you don’t care its your wedding day,

Keep this moment, slow down the pace.

You are ready to love this person,

finally get to be with them everyday.

No more goodbyes, no distance between,

It will be so wonderful this way.

You’re glad you know you’re a sinner,

and that your spouse surely is too.

You will have words, at times disagree,

and get in an argument or two.

Yet God will help you, he always will,

his business is to grow you in grace.

As you study his word, as you pray and repent,

the growth in your marriage will race.

Remember to always say good night,

don’t let the sun go down while your heart is cold,

Cultivate friendship, do things they like to do,

even things you can still do as you grow old.

Take the time to listen and ask questions,

rather than hearing yourself speak.

Plan special times to pray together,

at least one day a week.

Invite friends, invite strangers,

open up your home to many.

Care for each other, study each other,

know weaknesses and strengths–there’ll be plenty!

If children come along,

they will steal your heart and time its true.

But remember whose heart God calls you to first,

after Jesus your spouse is the one to pursue.

Don’t take it lightly, do not give up,

the grass on that side is not as green as it seems.

Marriage models Christ and his Bride,

therefore it glorifies God most extreme.

The world will tell you lies, the world will try to suck you in,

Fight hard with truth, the truth of his word, when temptations start to spin.

Remember your first love is Christ,

remember what he’s done for you,

extend that same mercy and love to one another,

especially when it’s hard to do.

Keep your eyes on the cross,

and remember the first one to say sorry wins.

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble,

if its genuine within.

Be each other’s biggest fan,

encourage with your words every day,

Pray for them, romance them,

and sometimes just be a friend and play.

You get to have this privilege,

of walking in marriage hand-in-hand,

As you both walk towards the horizon,

becoming like Jesus– that’s his plan.
