We think of sloth as lazy,
but it’s not exactly so.
The slothful can be inactive,
or constantly on the go.
Because just like other vices,
it’s a disposition of the heart.
A willful resistance to the demands,
of love is where sloth starts.
Slothfulness says, “It’s too hard,”
I refuse to grow and change.
God’s love on your life ignored,
it’s the choice to deny his claim.
It takes the form of Apathy,
always serving yourself before others.
You don’t have margin or room,
your schedule cannot be bothered.
Busy busy busy,
but what are you busy pursuing?
Is it fulfilling the demands of love,
does your Spirit need renewing?
The slothful wants to stay comfortable,
Escape is a symptom of this vice.
Someone else is always the problem,
you run away when it’s not “just right.”
You run away, you move,
job and location always changing.
But the reason you go is slothful,
you resist the hard work of staying.
Short cuts and quick fixes,
instead of slow and steady wins the race.
Wanting the benefits but not the hard,
you start feeling your own disgrace.
There is a solution to combat,
this vice of ignoring love’s demands.
You stay and persevere,
and watch the love in your heart expand.
Accepting God’s love for you,
unconditional, uneven, at great cost.
Gospel love always changes you,
if you receive the love of his cross.
What is the pattern of your heart?
are you apathetic or do you escape?
God offers you his faithfulness,
so faithfulness you can undertake.
Faithful in the little things,
fulfillment through committing.
Embracing the demands of love,
even when you feel like quitting.
“Just as I have loved you,
you are also to love one another.”
Faithfulness; unseen and steady,
toward your sister and your brother.
The gratification of sloth,
is so me-centered and so fleeting.
But God promises to make you new,
let his perfect work have its completing.
